I don't think Russell's paradox is actually expressible in Venn diagrams as shown here. You'd need distinct representations for set-as-set and set-as-element.
Frankly, this was a mistake. This strip is not XKCD and it is not Abstruse Goose - such strips inevitably turn into panderfests or overly referential features in which the whole joke is that you get the joke. Still, this wasn't an explicit Russell's paradox reference.
I mean, leaving aside the question of whether Venn diagrams can be represented by opaque pieces of paper held at chest length. This strip was more about the dialogue and I could've done that without the type of casual wannabe nerdery that pervades webcomics.
